Down the violet wind slid syrinx melodies, wild as foxes, mad as love, strange as awakening…
~ Cecilia Dart-Thornton, The Bitterbynde Trilogy
Without warning he sat bolt upright. His face sharpened with urgent horror, his eyes clouded like muddy pools.
~ Cecilia Dart-Thornton, The Ill-Made Mute
“Terrible things happen out there! A person could get lost, could pass right out of knowledge. Beware of footsteps in the night and dark wings that beat against the windows. Beware of the Hunt! Beware of water, wind, and stone! I warn you.”

Featured in Bookstr.com’s “10 Engrossing Fantasy Books like Lord of the Rings“.
The Stormriders land their winged stallions on the airy battlements of Isse Tower.Far below, the superstitious servants who dwell in the fortress’s lower depths tell tales of wicked creatures inhabiting the world outside, a world they have only glimpsed. Yet it is the least of the lowly – a mute, scarred, and utterly despised foundling – who dares to scale the Tower, sneak aboard a Windship, and then dive from the sky.
But the hearthside tales are all true! The unhuman wights are real in all their legions. They haunt every pool, every turn in the road, threatening and tormenting all travelers. A perilous journey begins.
The critics said:
Not since Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings fell into my hands have I been so impressed by a beautifully spun fantasy. .. Many fantasies are compared to Tolkien these days but few really have the excellent writing and good characterisation that this work offers. This is far above the usual offering in the fantasy field and the reader is left longing for the adventures to continue’
~ Andre Norton, Grand Master of Science Fiction
‘Hobbit-fanciers will find much to delight them in The Ill-Made Mute’
~ The Times (UK)
‘Cecilia Dart-Thornton exhibits strong and authentic evidence of having visited some of the more exotic corners of Faerie . . . Crucially for readers, she proves she’s able to bring the unicorn back alive, netted in golden prose . . . The opener of Dart-Thornton’s series proves a sweet surprise’
~ The Washington Post
