kids magical activities
In the lead-up to the Holiday Season now's the time to buy gifts online, to save yourself from being caught in the rush later on!

We have plenty of books to choose from, for all ages and tastes.

Browse our children's book selection, (like the book of "magic tricks" for kids) or our fantasy collection for adults who love books in the same genre as "The Lord of the Rings". Or check out our best-selling books on health and beauty!
October 2018
the book of wonder
It's October, and in the northern hemisphere last season's leaves are falling. It's time for pumpkins and funny costumes and all things orange-colored. Halloween is all about fantasy, and we specialize in fantasy.

The vintage classic "The Book of Wonder", however, is definitely not for kids. Beware - it's pretty creepy!

Children would prefer another of our wonderful classics, "The Princess and the Goblin". Professor Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, said he was inspired by both these books!

the poetic edda
For the Ancient Romans, September was the seventh month of the calendar which is why it is named after the Latin for “seven”, septem.
American poet Helen Hunt Jackson loved the month of September. She wrote, "By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather And autumn's best of cheer."
Groucho Marx wrote, "My favourite poem is the one that starts 'Thirty days hath September' because it actually tells you something." :)
Speaking of poetry, have you read any Icelandic sagas lately? They were among JRR Tolkien's favorite reads! You can now read "The Poetic Edda - A Book That Inspired Tolkien" in Icelandic, with the exact English translation and illustrations he would have held in his own hands. With characters including the original Loki and Odin, it's one of our bestsellers!
August 2018
australian turtles
August is here, and in the Northern Hemisphere the weather remains warm, though cooler nights are approaching. Fall is Harvest Time (and nearing hibernation time for some animals), so take the opportunity to browse through some of our books on "husbandry".

What is "husbandry"? It's defined as "the care, cultivation, and breeding of crops and animals."

Leaves of Gold Press offers books about growing fruit - both rare and common varieties - and about caring for Australian Turtles.

Eric Brighteyes
The Poetic Edda - A Book That Inspired Tolkien
Professor JRR Tolkien is on record as stating that many books he read and loved were among his inspirations for writing The Lord of the Rings and other works.

We are pleased to announce that, in response to letters on behalf of the well-known and charitable Tolkien Estate Limited, our fine collection of books that inspired Professor JRR Tolkien (called "Tolkien's Bookshelf" since 2013) is now called "The Professor's Bookshelf".

The books have been re-issued and are better than ever! Reading the Tolkien Estate letters also prompted us to recall that instead of stopping at 10 books, as we've done since 2013, we could be offering many more Tolkien's-inspiration titles to Tolkien fans. Our range of The Professor's Bookshelf collection can expand more than threefold. So watch this space and keep an eye out for new releases!

We would like to thank the Tolkien Estate for taking the time to send us so many letters and emails, even though we have no association with them!

Father's Day celebrates fathers and fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. In Europe it has been celebrated on March 19 since the Middle Ages. This celebration was brought by the Spanish and Portuguese to Latin America, where March 19 is often still used for it, though many countries in Europe and the Americas have adopted the U.S. date, which is the third Sunday of June (falling June 17 in 2018). [Wikipedia], In Australia, Father's Day is celebrated in September.
Show Dad you love him by giving him a book!

flower fairies

It's National Poetry Month and to celebrate, we are featuring our beautifully illustrated books of poems for children - the Australian Flower Fairies Birthday Book and Address Book.

Here's one of the poems:

(Nymphaea gigantica)

The pale blue waterlily blooms
From the black mud of the lagoon.
Out of this sticky mess
Come plants of delicate finesse.
Swaying in the tropical warmth,
They’re like a tiny world -
Home to insects day and night
Who use it as a rest from flight.

The fairies love their pale blue flower
And guard it with their strength and power.
They use its floating, plate-like leaves
As a platform for their fun and games;
Diving from the dark green edge -
Which makes a most convenient ledge -
Splashing and laughing as they play;
It’s like a picnic every day.

the kitten who wants to fall asleep

Parents - This Book Could Change Your Life!
Announcing "The Kitten Who Wants to Fall Asleep"

Children sometimes find it hard to get to sleep.
What if you could read them a bedtime story incorporating powerful psychological methods to help them fall asleep quickly, easily and without drugs?

Psychological sleep induction techniques include:
• putting aside your thoughts until the following day
• breathing deeply
• slowing down
• visualizing a safe and peaceful place
• imagining a descent with the sensation of sinking
• progressive muscle relaxation
• using sleep-triggering words
• employing the 'infectiousness' of yawning.

Such methods are well-known and can be found in libraries or by searching for 'psychological sleep techniques' on the Internet.
This book also uses the hypnotic power of rhyme and rhythm. Songs and lullabies have traditionally been used to lull children to sleep. 'Hypnotic' poetry works in much the same way.
The poems in this book are in the relaxing, calming rhythm called 3/4 time, better known as 'waltz time'. All parents know that gentle, rocking rhythms can soothe a child.
The rhyming is as important as the rhythm. Children love poems that rhyme. For them, rhyming words make poetry fun and memorable. Just as children respond to Forssen Ehrlin's sleep-inducing story of Roger the Rabbit (the inspiration for this book), so they can fall asleep while listening to the tale of Misti the Kitty.
September 2015 She's BACK!
And now she even has her own Facebook page!

Princess Pam Fell Into the Jam

More than a hilarious rhyme, this is a slapstick comedy that causes a riot of laughter when read aloud. Princess Pam and her messy sisters appeal to every child.
The rollicking rhymes, the unconventional story and the lively, detailed pictures combine to make one of the funniest and most original children's books published.

This popular book, with illustrations in glowing colour, was chosen to be read aloud on national TV, on the well-loved ABC children's show 'Playschool'.

Rare and Heritage Fruit

Leaves of Gold Press launches a brand new series for gardeners, backyard farmers, historians, cooks and home-brewers: Rare and Heritage Fruit - now available in in large format paperback throughout the world.

‘Heritage’ or ‘heirloom’ fruits such as old-fashioned varieties of apple, quince, fig, plum, peach and pear are increasingly popular due to their diverse flavours, excellent nutritional qualities and other desirable characteristics. They are part of our horticultural, vintage and culinary inheritance. To pick a tree-ripened heritage fruit from your own back yard and bite into it is to experience the taste of fresh food as our forefathers knew it.

During the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries fruit diversity was huge, but in modern supermarkets only a limited range of commercial fruit varieties is now available to consumers.

Heritage, heirloom and rare fruit enthusiasts across the world are currently reviving our horticultural legacy by renovating old orchards and identifying ‘lost’, unusual and historic fruit varieties. The goal is to make a much wider range of fruit trees available again to the home gardener.
This series of handbooks aims to help.
